Wally is the nickname of the 37-foot 2-inch wall in left field at Fenway Park. Broadcaster Jerry Remy used to tell stories about him that he made up during televised broadcasts of the Red Sox games! Crazy right?!!! Anyway, this character design is another one that is influenced by the muppets. I’d say Sesame Street in particular which shows what a huge influence Jim Henson had on the world of 3D mascot costumes. This green furry thing with sneakers was fun to draw as was Tessie, another green monster which is the little sister of Wally! Both of them have such strong personalities that the poses kind of fell out of me. Combined with their awesome look everything just came together fairly quickly. The drawings (I think) have such a fun feel because their goofy character traits really shined through the photographs that the MLB and the team supplied. You can take a look below to see the results!
