CHALLENGE
this was a unique mascot out of the MLB bunch that I’ve worked on. He’s not a wild fantastical character an animal. He’s actually human. Even his costume is a human with a simple handle bar mustache! This makes the design unique in its execution. He’s actually based on an actual person! Milt Mason was a 69 year old guy who sat at the top of the scoreboard when the Brewers were a new team. He vowed to do this until the Brewers could draw a home crowd of 40,000 fans! Mason died in 1973 and is considered the first Bernie Brewer. As a tribute to Milt Bernie became the teams mascot in 1973. The character slid down a slide after every homer and Brewers win. A man after my own heart, Bernie slid down the slide into a giant beer mug! Now that’s a mascot! Eventually Bernie and his slide and mug were retired in the 80’s but like a true champion he came out of retirement in 1993. I came into the picture a few years after that. The MLB contacted me to refresh the teams licensing program. I created a new set of vector art starring Bernie. The poses and turnaround art that I did can be seen below.
